Layers, Textures & Lighting

For a space that exudes depth and character, begin with a thoughtfully laid out space plan that prioritizes ease of access and functionality. Ensure the layout allows for versatility and easy flow within the space.

Next layer is lighting!

Once you have your space figured out, think about all the ways the room can be used - - It’s always nice to have a different ways to create a mood in your space (for example: You have a beautiful art collection- Wash the wall with dramatic light or assign an area some beautiful sconces.) Once the architectural lighting is decided you will likely want some table lamps, maybe a little reading light, and so one…. Don’t ever underestimate maximizing natural daylight!

Next, incorporate a diverse range of textures and colors!

Avoid a one-dimensional look. For example, if aiming for a serene beach vibe, stay steer clear of a monotonous palette of whites and beiges. YES, your color pallet should be light and airy-but make sure to introduce organic textures, such as wood, linen, stone, and plaster, and muted colors to evoke the essence of the shore. By harmoniously combining various textures and colors in this way, the space can come alive with a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

So at this point it should be clear that there is no right or wrong way to do it, but rather a successful space is one full of layers. It takes time to create this, and if you're doing it on your own, take the time to allow it to evolve with special pieces, picked up from the flea market of a variety of home stores. Have fun!
